BlueEfficiency Power: Mercedes-Benz presents new engine generation for commercial vehicles

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a totally new generation of Mercedes-Benz medium-duty engines with the series designation OM 93x in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim today. Together with the equally new heavy-duty OM 470 engine, Daimler is expanding its "BlueEfficiency Power" engine portfolio into a comprehensive range complying with the impending Euro VI emissions standard. Initially presented in 2011, the OM 471 is already in service on long-haul operations in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros.


"The new engines set new benchmarks in their class. They have been designed in uncompromising manner for environmental friendliness, economy and performance," noted Georg Weiberg, Head of Truck Product Engineering Daimler Trucks, at the presentation of the engines. For the first time ever in an engine series for commercial vehicles, all the engines comply with the future Euro VI emissions standard. Euro VI will be mandatory in the EU from 2013/14. "As such, Mercedes-Benz is once again assuming the pioneering role in environmental protection," Weiberg added. He emphasized that this was particularly important for the OM 93x, as medium-duty engines are deployed primarily in trucks and buses which are used in conurbations, where reductions in emissions directly benefit the local population.

At the same time, the new medium-duty engines are extremely economical thanks to their long service lives, low consumption of fuel, AdBlue and engine oil and long maintenance intervals. Cutting-edge engine technology assures the OM 93x series of spontaneous acceleration and impressive power delivery. One of the technical highlights is the variable valve timing, which features for the first time in a diesel engine.

"We have invested around 500 million euros in development of the new Mercedes-Benz OM 934 and OM 936 engines and their production facilities at the Mannheim plant," observes Stefan Buchner, Head of Global Powertrain, Procurement and Manufacturing Engineering Daimler Trucks. "This commitment has paid off: the new OM93x series is a milestone among medium-duty engines and suitable for a diverse range of applications – in trucks, buses and as an industrial engine." The engines form part of a modular system with a high degree of shared components.

The medium-duty OM 934 and OM 936 engines, with four and six cylinders and a displacement of 5.1 and 7.7 litres respectively, cover a power range from 115 kW (156 hp) to 260 kW (354 hp). In the long term, the two engines will replace the engines of the 900 series launched in 1996, with a production volume to date of almost one million units.

The heavy-duty OM 470 engine with six cylinders and a displacement of 10.7 litres spans the power range from 240 kW (326 hp) to 315 kW (428 hp). It follows the OM 471 with a displacement of 12.8 litres which was presented last year.

The new engines are tailor-made for light- to heavy-duty distribution transport and for service in light- and medium-duty construction and long-haul transport. The OM 936 is also designed for deployment in urban and rural-service buses in vertical and rural-service buses in vertical and horizontal configuration.

Installation in other brands and models of Daimler Trucks on other continents is planned in due course. It is also planned to use the cutting-edge four- and six-cylinder engines in off-highway applications as industrial engines. Series production of the urban bus variants at the Mannheim engine plant will start shortly.

The Mannheim plant operates according to the "synchronous factory" principle. This means that the three production areas of foundry, machining and assembly function as an integrated system as part of a continuous production flow. Global supplier management is also coordinated in Mannheim.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL: Engine and drive system - The power and the economy

Rich power reserves plus modest fuel consumption – this formula describes the fundamental characteristics of the new SL models. They owe this in part to the two V6 and V8 units from the new generation of BlueDIRECT engines from Mercedes-Benz. As is already the case with the S-Class and the CLS, they now also enable the SL to achieve previously unattained marks for efficiency in its segment. The V8 in the new SL 500 has at its disposal 4663 cubic centimetres of displacement from which it achieves 320 kW (435 hp) – so in spite of having around 0.8 litres less displacement that’s some 12 percent more than its predecessor (285 kW/388 hp). The consumption, meanwhile, falls by up to 22 percent, with the torque increasing at the same time from 530 Nm to 700 Nm – an increase of 32 percent. The V6 engine for the SL 350 has the same displacement as its predecessor – 3499 cubic centimetres – from which it now achieves 225 kW (306 hp). Whilst this means that its output is 7 kW less than the engine in its predecessor (232 kW/315 hp), as the torque simultaneously climbs from 360 Nm to the current figure of 370 Nm, there is no perceptible loss of power – on the contrary, in fact: when accelerating, the new SL 350 even proves superior. Plus the new V6 impresses with its outstanding consumption figures. It is content with 6.8 litres over 100 kilometres, making it almost 30 percent more economical than its predecessor (9.7 l/100 km).


Thanks to the economy of both engines, it has been possible to decrease the volume of the fuel tank from 80 litres to 65 litres. Nevertheless a greater range is available than was the case with the predecessor.

Of a torquey disposition when sprinting

The acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h go to prove that economy does nothing to dampen torquey spirits. Despite a nominal reduction of 7 kW, the SL 350 covers this sprint in 5.9 seconds, which is three tenths faster than its predecessor. From a standstill the SL 500 races to the 100 km/h mark in 4.6 seconds, making it eight tenths faster than the previous SL 500.

Both engines are exemplary when it comes to in-gear acceleration, too. Proof positive can be found in acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h in 4th gear, for only good figures facilitate fast and safe overtaking on rural roads. 5.5 seconds for the SL 350 and 3.2 seconds for the SL 500 make the new SL’s excellent characteristics in this discipline plain for all to behold.

“The new BlueDIRECT engines in the SL with six and eight cylinders form a unique synthesis of effortlessly superior power delivery, comfort and consuption”, comments Professor Dr Thomas Weber, responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars on the Board of Management of Daimler AG. “Both impress in the new SL, delivering refinement of the highest calibre and exemplary environmental acceptability.”

The V8 is in a new league of its own

The new V8 was systematically enhanced on the basis of the very successful predecessor. Mercedes-Benz engineers primarily achieved a high output for a lower displacement by using one turbocharger for each bank of cylinders. The turbochargers were configured to provide high torque even at low engine speeds – compared to the previous engine, the result is an increase of more than 40 percent at 2000 rpm. A superb 700 Nm are available between 1600 and 4750 rpm.

The V6 impresses with its low fuel consumption and high comfort

The new six-cylinder is a naturally aspirated engine. The most striking change between the new V6 unit and its predecessor is a reduction in the V-angle between the cylinder banks from 90 degrees to 60 degrees. This enabled the balancer shaft counteracting primary vibrations to be omitted, and as a result the driver registers an outstanding level of comfort.

Innovative technology makes V6 and V8 engines fit for the future

Both the new V6 and the new V8 from Mercedes-Benz are derived from their predecessors. They have aluminium crankcases, pistons and cylinder heads. The crankshaft, connecting rods and valves are of special forged steel. Practically all the details were, however, newly developed or revised with the aim of achieving more fuel economy, more output and more refinement.

The technology package in the new engine generation includes a number of new developments that are unique in this combination:

- In combination with multi-spark ignition, a further developed, 3rd-generation direct fuel injection system with spray-guided combustion and piezo-electric injectors offers further possibilities for fuel savings – in the V8 by means of an improved, homogeneous combustion process, and in the V6 by a new, stratified combustion process with a considerably extended characteristic map and fuel-efficient lean-burn technology.

- In conjunction with the ECO start/stop function, shift point adjustment and systematic friction-reducing measures, improvements in day-to-day fuel consumption of up to 30 percent are possible.

- Power consumption by ancillary units has been reduced. These include an optimised water pump with 2nd-generation thermal management, a demand-controlled oil pump, a volume-controlled high-pressure fuel pump and an intelligent generator management system.


The key data for the new SL
ECO start/stop function with direct-start

The standard-specification ECO start/stop function operates with starter-supported direct-start. This means that when the engine is switched off, the attitude of the crankshaft is registered by a new crankshaft sensor so that the engine control unit knows the positions of the individual pistons. On restarting, it can then select the cylinder that is in the most suitable position for first ignition. After the starter has briefly turned over the engine, reliable injection, ignition and combustion is immediately possible there.

An additional, demand-controlled electric transmission oil pump supplies the clutches of the automatic transmission with oil pressure prior to starting, so as to enable a swift resumption of the journey after direct starting of the combustion engine via the ECO start/stop function. The starter motor (starter) has also undergone thorough modification: it is now designed to be highly durable, ensuring that it will last a car’s lifetime in continuous urban driving involving frequent auto-starting. In addition, the on-board electrical system is supported by a second battery. As is the case with the starter battery (95 Ah), the “auxiliary battery” (12 Ah) also features maintenance-free AGM technology (AGM = absorbed glass mat).

Intelligent alternator management

Its intelligent alternator management also contributes to the luxury roadster’s sensitive treatment of energy. When the battery is charged to more than 80 percent, the alternator is governed to take load off the engine. The energy required in this operating state is supplied by the battery. If the driver removes their foot from the accelerator pedal or applies the brakes, kinetic energy is recovered and fed to the battery.

Automatic transmission for less consumption and more fun at the wheel

All SL models come with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission as standard. Now in its sixth generation, the multi-ratio automatic transmission was developed by Mercedes-Benz and has been produced since 1960. The new version has once again been thoroughly revised to optimise consumption and comfort compared with its predecessor. The new generation of the torque converter provides an improved dynamic response and reduced noise and vibration levels thanks to a new hydraulic circuit, as well as enhanced dampers and an optimised torque converter housing. The extreme wheel-slip reduction of the torque converter housing, combined with

- larger mechanical damper de-coupling, helps to reduce consumption significantly;

- in addition, the gearshift program in ECO mode has been changed in favour of lower engine rpm at cruising speeds;

- friction-optimised bearings and seals plus a new automatic transmission oil (FE-ATF) with reduced viscosity in conjunction with an optimised additive package.


This results in more driving enjoyment than was the case with the predecessor transmission – and also improved smoothness, not to mention an average of seven percent less consumption (in the NEDC).

What’s more, the increased durability of the new oil also brings with it new oil-change intervals from 50,000 (old) to 125,000 kilometres (new).

DIRECT SELECT gearshift with designer chic and athletic allure

Mercedes-Benz is equipping the new SL with the newly developed DIRECT SELECT gearshift in the centre console – the first vehicle with an automatic transmission to receive this honour. In so doing, the premium brand is establishing a completely new generation of central gearshift for vehicles featuring shift-by-wire (ShW) transmission technology. Its small control lever, reminiscent of a high-calibre joystick, has a driver-oriented position, being installed on the centre console. Its striking design not only underlines the sporty character of the roadster; it also emphasises the high quality of the SL with its exquisite touch and feel, superb ergonomics and unique look.

In addition to an Eco program, the 7G-TRONIC PLUS in the new SL also offers a sports-oriented automatic program. Over and above this, the driver can also select a manual shift program which they operate via the paddles on the steering wheel – which also come as part of the standard specification.

The two automatic programs automatically adjust on a continuous basis in line with the driver’s behaviour. By way of example, if they step on the accelerator pedal more dynamically than before, the shift points automatically move towards more sportiness. In the ECO mode, the shift program is configured differently for lower engine speeds during cruising, thus saving fuel.

In the sportily oriented automatic program, the output is available more spontaneously and it shifts faster. The double-declutching function and active downshifts have been systematically enhanced. During heavy braking, the transmission shifts down considerably earlier, so higher engine speeds make the acceleration which follows easier. The double-declutching function, in which the engine speed is actively raised with an abrupt acceleration, ensures faster and more comfortable downshifting. The concomitant acoustic response underlines a sporty driving style and enhances the unique roadster feel.

In the manual transmission mode controlled using shift paddles on the steering wheel, the engine responds to the throttle over a steeper characteristic pedal curve. Selecting the gear via the steering-wheel gearshift buttons facilitates minimal shift times and emphasises the sporty double declutching. In manual mode, the gear indicator in the instrument cluster moves to a separate section of the colour display, where it shows the seven available gears plus the gear currently selected.

SL 63 AMG, SLK 55 AMG and ML 63 AMG: High performance to the power of three

Mercedes-AMG GmbH is offering three new high-performance cars that cater to a broad spectrum of requirements in the shape of the SL 63 AMG, SLK 55 AMG and ML 63 AMG. The two prestigious eight-cylinder roadster models and the mighty SUV distinguish themselves with efficient drive systems, breathtakingly dynamic performance and emotion-charged design.


The stage is set for the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. The latest version of the high-performance roadster impresses on several counts: systematic lightweight construction, increased output and enhanced driving dynamics, all combined with a 30 percent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to an all-aluminium bodyshell, similar to that of the SLS AMG supercar, the vehicle has shed 125 kilograms. With a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms and an output of 395 kW (537 hp) or 415 kW (564 hp), the new model boasts the perfect ingredients for unparalleled dynamism and a sublime driving experience that is truly unique.

A further boost in performance comes courtesy of a winning combination: a further improved AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the AMG high-performance compound braking system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. An enticing mix of stylish design, extensive standard equipment and a high level of safety.

Supreme performance and high efficiency: the SL 63 AMG is available with a choice of two power ratings for the first time. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 800 Newton metres of torque. If the AMG Performance package is specified, drivers will have 415 kW (564 hp) and 900 Newton metres at their disposal – more power than any other competitor in this segment. The result is phenomenal performance, as underlined by the acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds and to 200 km/h in 12.9 or 12.6 seconds respectively. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, although this increases to 300 km/h (likewise electronically limited) with the AMG Performance package on board. NEDC combined consumption comes in at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres for both power ratings – a full 4.2 litres or 30 percent less than for the outgoing model.

The eight-cylinder powerplant with the abbreviation M157 features a combination of innovative high-tech components for high power output and scintillating power delivery on the one hand and remarkably low fuel consumption on the other. Besides spray-guided direct petrol injection, the engine features an all-aluminium crankcase, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-to-water intercooling, generator management and an ECO start/stop function. The weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust system with two sets of chromed twin tailpipes produces a distinctive soundtrack.

Intelligent lightweight construction with aluminium bodyshell and carbon fibre

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the low fuel consumption figures. The SL 63 AMG is built around a lightweight all-aluminium bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG supercar. Compared to the outgoing model, this design not only delivers a significant weight saving of around 110 kilograms, it also greatly enhances rigidity, safety and comfort. The boot lid helps to further trim the weight. For the first time on a volume-produced model, the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared to a conventional boot lid.

AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The lightweight design measures are not just limited to the body of the SL 63 AMG, however, as the steering knuckles and spring links on the four-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension's wheel location components are made of aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response characteristics of the spring-and-damper units.

Mercedes-AMG has retained the ABC active suspension and damper system: the new SL 63 AMG is equipped as standard with the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, but in a further improved version. Exceptionally sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping ("Sport") or a more comfort-oriented setting for a high level of comfort on long journeys ("Comfort") can be selected at the push of a button. This together with the new electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering endows the flagship AMG model with fleet-footed, agile cornering and exceptional feedback at the limits of performance. The steering has a constant, more direct ratio, together with variable power assistance that adjusts depending on the suspension setting.

Power transmission can likewise be adapted to specific requirements, as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual). In "C" mode, the ECO start/stop function is active at all times and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stopped. Meanwhile, the RACE START function allows lightning quick acceleration from a standing start.

The brakes are designed to deliver maximum performance too: besides the newly developed AMG high-performance composite braking system, there is also the alternative of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system familiar from the SLS AMG. The SL 63 AMG leaves the factory fitted with AMG five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and shod with tyres size 255/35 R 19 at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear. AMG multi-spoke forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tyres help to reduce the unsprung masses. They are also available in matt black including a rim flange with a high-sheen finish.

Design: stylish, supreme, dynamic

The SL 63 AMG is the latest addition to the AMG roadster family and displays the hallmark styling elements of a supreme high-performance car from Affalterbach: the dynamic, distinctive AMG bodystyling comprises the front apron with large cooling air intakes, AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower cross strut in silver chrome. Among the particularly eye-catching features are the new AMG radiator grille with a double louvre in silver chrome, the side sill panels and the "V8 BITURBO" logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome. At the rear, the AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system and the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert draw the design to a fitting conclusion.

The SL 63 AMG interior is likewise inspired by the SLS AMG and offers a feast for all the senses: the four air vents styled like jet engines, the E-SELECT lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the supercar's styling. Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in single-tone or two-tone nappa leather with their own V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges in the seat backrests, a multicontour function and seat heating, as well as AMG carbon-fibre trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels, ambient lighting and an IWC-design analogue clock. One of the stand-out details on the AMG Performance steering wheel is the AMG logo in the lower metal insert. The sportily designed AMG instrument cluster provides a wealth of information with its TFT colour monitor, AMG start-up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER. Outstanding material quality and high-calibre workmanship underline the attention to detail paid by the Mercedes and AMG experts.

SLK 55 AMG: top figures in all disciplines

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG is the most powerful SLK of all time. Its newly developed naturally aspirated AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system combines ultimate performance with minimised fuel consumption. With a maximum output of 310 kW (422 hp) and peak torque of 540 Newton metres, the SLK 55 AMG outperforms all of its direct competitors. The SLK 55 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Its fuel consumption of 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre are some 30 percent lower than the figures for its predecessor.

Exclusive combination of advanced technologies

The high-tech M 152 powerpack enthrals with an unrivalled combination of advanced technologies. No other petrol engine features direct injection at a pressure of 200 bar, spray-guided combustion and piezoelectric injectors, all in conjunction with map-controlled cylinder shut-off, an all-aluminium crankcase honed using a special "spectacle" technique, four valves per cylinder with continuous camshaft adjustment, a high compression ratio of 12.6:1, ECO stop/start function and generator management – while revving to a maximum speed of over 7000 rpm. All of these measures result in an optimum efficiency factor, which is a precondition for high fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions.

Borrowed from Formula 1: AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system

Engine efficiency is significantly improved in particular by the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system that has been newly developed by Mercedes-AMG: under partial load conditions, cylinders two, three, five and eight are shut off, resulting in considerable fuel savings. This technology is employed in similar form in the approx. 750 hp V8 engines used in Formula 1. The cylinder shut-off function is available over a wide engine speed range from 800 to 3600 rpm if the driver has selected transmission mode "C" - Controlled Efficiency. The ECO start/stop function and generator management further contribute to the low fuel consumption figures. For the first time, AMG is using a sports exhaust system featuring an exhaust flap on each side. This technology resolves the conflict of objectives between producing an emotion-stirring sound when driving in a sporty manner and a more discreet engine tone in the partial load range.

Perfect combination: highly dynamic driving and pleasurable cruising

The AMG sports suspension with Torque Vectoring Brakes and AMG Direct-Steer system provides remarkable lateral dynamics and agile handling, together with the comfort on long journeys that Mercedes is renowned for. The AMG Direct-Steer system is the perfect complement to the Torque Vectoring Brakes: compared with standard steering, it enhances handling and agility while also reducing the effort required when parking.

AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, size 8 x 18 (front) and 9 x 18 (rear), are shod with 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 wide-base tyres respectively. Alternatively, customers have the choice of two further design variants from the AMG Performance Studio: AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in either a titanium grey or matt black finish. The AMG high-performance braking system stands out for its outstanding responsiveness, short stopping distances and excellent fade resistance.

The optionally available AMG Handling package injects the SLK 55 AMG with even greater sportiness. It comprises an AMG Performance suspension with stiffer tuning, an AMG rear-axle differential lock, composite brake discs at the front and a three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather with Alcantara® inserts in the grip areas.

Unmistakable: uniquely styled design and appointments

Classic roadster proportions with typical AMG design traits as well as a hint of SLS AMG – that's how the SLK 55 AMG can be summed up visually. The new AMG front apron has large air intakes and AMG-specific LED‑ daytime running lamps. Inspired by the SLS AMG supercar, the wide radiator grille features a large, centrally positioned Mercedes star. On the SLK 55 AMG, the louvres in the radiator grille and the front apron's cross strut are painted in a high-gloss black finish. Headlamps with dark edging and darkened tail lights also come as standard on the top-of-the-range V8 model. Further styling highlights include the AMG rear apron with black diffuser insert, the AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes and the spoiler lip on the boot lid.

The interior design is likewise reminiscent of the SLS AMG Roadster: the four air vents in the style of jet engines evoke associations with the supercar, as does the centre console finished in brushed aluminium. The AMG Performance steering wheel, with its flattened top and bottom sections, also boasts metal trim, aluminium shift paddles and grip areas wrapped in perforated leather. The AMG sports seats with their individual seat upholstery layout come as standard with combined ARTICO man-made leather/black fabric upholstery and high-quality AMG badges in the backrests.

ML 63 AMG: efficiency and superlative performance

The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG stands for efficiency and performance, exclusivity and a superlative driving experience. Burning 11.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined, 276 g CO2/km), the high-performance SUV undercuts its predecessor by 28 percent. The basis for the low fuel consumption and top-class performance is provided by the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, featuring spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezoelectric injectors, ECO start/stop system, an all-aluminium crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air-to-water intercooling and generator management. The eight-cylinder unit extracts a maximum power output of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Newton metres of torque from its displacement of 5461 cc. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package, these figures rise to 410 kW(557 hp) and 760 Newton metres. Both variants of the ML 63 AMG deliver sports car-like performance: the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds and 4.7 seconds respectively, while top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Efficient and variable: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

Power transmission to all four permanently driven wheels is handled by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission is fascinatingly versatile. In "Controlled Efficiency" (C) mode, the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine whenever the vehicle is stopped.

As previously, Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40 : 60 in the interests of dynamic handling. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package – consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) – is combined for the first time with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body's roll angle during cornering. Apart from enhanced agility and driving pleasure, the system has the additional effect of increasing handling stability and therefore safety, particularly at higher speeds.

The electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering varies the power assistance depending on the vehicle's speed and also helps to save fuel. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance. The ML 63 AMG rides as standard on AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels measuring 9 x 20, painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with size 265/45 R 20 tyres. Tyres in 295/35 R 21 format on 10 x 21 AMG light-alloy wheels are optionally available.

Specific AMG bodystyling with trim in matt silver chrome

The design of the new ML 63 AMG exudes self-confidence, athleticism and power. Under the radiator grille with louvres painted in high-gloss black and the Mercedes star in the centre is a large cooling air intake. Fitted at the bottom of the AMG front apron is a trim strip in matt silver chrome, which lends the front a wider appearance while harmonising with the surrounds of the daytime running lamps in the side cooling air intakes. Another eye-catching feature is the AMG rear apron with its simulated black air outlet openings and trim strip in matt silver chrome. In contrast to the other M-Class variants, the ML 63 AMG features two sets of visible chromed twin tailpipes.

High-class, sporty interior

A sporty character and supreme quality define the interior of the high-performance SUV from AMG. This is embodied in the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats offering pronounced lateral support just as much as in the four-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel. The standard leather upholstery includes contrasting double topstitching as well as AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats.

In the northern hemisphere, winter is around the corner and every car owner is doing the usual preparations in order to avoid being taken by surprise in icy cold conditions. Superb THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control: Perfect climate aboard M-Class and E-Class

Carefully balanced control of the interior climate is especially important in the winter. This is why Mercedes-Benz offers the THERMOTRONIC luxury automatic climate control system for the E-Class and M-Class. Apart from regulating the climate separately for the driver, front passenger and passengers in the rear, it allows individual pre-settings to be programmed too.



This system furthermore includes a pollutant sensor which automatically switches to air recirculation mode if it detects any sudden increase in the carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxide levels in the outside air – when driving through a tunnel, for instance. Another highlight of the THERMOTRONIC system is the residual heat function: pressing the “Rest” button heats or ventilates the passenger compartment for around 30 minutes when the engine is switched off.

THERMOTRONIC heats up the passenger compartment efficiently, even after a cold start on winter mornings. This is thanks to a heating output of eleven kilowatts, equivalent to the capacity of the central heating system in a modern family home. On the diesel models, a heat exchanger with six integral PTC heating elements (PTC = Positive Temperature Coefficient) is also activated when the outside temperature falls below a certain level in order to boost the effect of the main heat exchanger with an electrical output of around 1200 watts. The assistance from the PTC heater is necessary due to the high thermal efficiency of today’s CDI engines, which is precisely what makes them so economical and means that they dissipate considerably less heat to the coolant under partial load conditions than conventional engines. The E-Class and M-Class are equipped as standard with THERMATIC, a two-zone automatic climate control system.

To make long journeys or lengthy winter outings in the M-Class even more enjoyable, the centre console holds a little surprise in store: the tempered cup holders include a Peltier element that is capable of keeping drinks hot or chilled in a temperature range of 8° to 55° Celsius at the push of a button. So, a “take-away” coffee can be kept hot on the morning drive to the slopes, for example. Alternatively, with the cooling function activated, the thermal cup holders are able to stop chocolate bars from melting if a very high interior temperature has been set.

E-Class 4MATIC: stability pact for the winter: Gripping drive system for Saloon and Estate

The 4MATIC powertrain in the E-Class is one of the best-performing permanent all-wheel drive systems on the market. The basic design concept, with the engine installed longitudinally and the integral transmission and transfer case unit, produces a compact, lightweight arrangement that minimises frictional losses, heralding a number of benefits compared to other passenger car systems with a transverse power unit and selectable 4x4. As with the 4MATIC system’s set-up on a dry or wet road, handling stability and, therefore, active safety are paramount at all times when wintry conditions prevail, too.



The mechanical principle of the 4MATIC system, featuring a 45:55 torque split between the front and rear axles and a multi-disc limited-slip centre differential with a basic locking torque of 50 Nm, offers all the right ingredients. This basic design enables high levels of traction, as the dynamic shift in axle load toward the rear axle that occurs during acceleration is harnessed to deliver more drive torque to the rear wheels. However, the multi-disc differential lock is also able to shift the drive torque between the front and rear axles, varying the split between 30:70 and 70:30 as the road conditions dictate. Consequently, intervention by the ESP®, 4ETS or ASR electronic control systems can be delayed for as long as possible and the bulk of the drive torque converted into tractive power, even on slippery roads. All control system interventions go virtually unnoticed, yet drivers still know straight away if they are driving near the limit, as a yellow warning symbol will flash in the instrument cluster. This serves as a clear prompt to adapt the driving style to the road conditions.

The drive mechanism’s permanently engaged design offers key advantages over other systems that first need to diagnose a lack of grip before activating the 4x4 drive. The 4MATIC on the E-Class will have already made use of this valuable time to start transmitting drive torque via the wheels to the road. When pulling away in wintry conditions, the E-Class 4MATIC models are designed to develop maximum traction. To this end, certain road conditions are automatically detected and the interventions of the 4ETS electronic traction control system adjusted so as to achieve the greatest possible acceleration while minimising wheel slip, thereby ensuring optimum handling stability.

New petrol engines and an optimised powertrain make the 2011 Mercedes-Benz
E-Class the standard for efficiency in its segment. All of the petrol and diesel engines in the E-Class range now employ direct injection technology, with combined fuel consumptions of 6.8 - 7.0 litres and 8.9 litres per 100 km respectively for the new BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 units. The reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 percent is also due to the standard ECO start/stop function and the improved 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission, which is now also available for the four-cylinder model variants.

E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC: First ever all-wheel drive E-Class with a four-cylinder diesel engine

The ECO start/stop function and 7G-TRONIC PLUS ensure a particularly high level of energy efficiency in the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC. The first E-Class with 4MATIC and a four-cylinder diesel engine has an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and stands out for its smooth drive characteristics coupled with impressive performance: it completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 238 km/h. In the process, the engine burns just 5.6 l/100 km on the NEDC driving cycle, making the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC the most efficient all-wheel drive diesel model in its power category in the executive class.

New chassis developments and innovative dynamic handling control systems: Relishing the winter with the M-Class

Outstanding safety and well-balanced ride comfort combined with impressive driving dynamics on dry, wet as well as wintry roads, plus superlative skills off the beaten track are some of the key strengths of the third-generation M-Class with permanent all-wheel drive. The premium SUV also makes its mark with new chassis developments and innovative dynamic handling control systems designed to increase both driving pleasure and active safety in winter.



The optional ON&OFFROAD package for the new M-Class uses six different driving modes to optimise driving dynamics and handling safety by providing the optimum drive control needed to cope with the wide spectrum of operating conditions encountered both on and off the road. Drivers have the choice of an automatic mode, two specially programmed off-road modes as well as three on-road modes – “Winter”, “Sport” and “Towing”.

The specific driving modes for all-wheel drive resolve a conflict of objectives that has previously hampered further development of 4MATIC and the 4ETS electronic traction system as well as ESP® and acceleration skid control (ASR). To take an example: on off-road tracks or snow-covered roads, it is important that the control systems respond very gently due to the low friction coefficients, but this makes a sporty set-up virtually impossible. Conversely, a sporty basic setup impairs performance abilities in off-road terrain and snow. In the past, excellent compromises were always found which worked brilliantly under all conditions. The new ON&OFFROAD package with its specific driving modes, however, enables driving dynamics and handling safety to be optimised almost as far as is physically possible under all operating conditions by maximising networking between the individual control systems.

In terms of “hardware”, the ON&OFFROAD package comprises an underguard, a two-stage transfer case with low-range ratio, an inter-axle differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres.

Winter driving mode: more fun, more safety

The driving mode is chosen using a rotary control on the centre console. To ensure the selected driving mode – in this case “Winter” – is clearly indicated, a special snowflake graphic appears in the instrument cluster, while the COMAND screen shows the M-Class in a wintry, snow-covered landscape.

The ON&OFFROAD package’s winter driving mode optimises handling on roads affected by snow, ice or freezing rain and when using snow chains, and offers drivers added safety with its well-defined, predictable reactions. The extensive fine-tuning work carried out focused on further increasing longitudinal traction, at the same time as improving lateral dynamics and handling safety. The development team was able to implement these specifications to impressive effect using targeted control mechanisms in the drivetrain:

- When pulling away with or without the steering turned, the inter-axle lock in the centre differential is triggered earlier in order to increase traction and reduce understeer when accelerating briskly. In parallel to this, the 7G-TRONIC PLUS switches to the “gentler” ECO mode and automatically engages 2nd gear when pulling away to avoid high wheel slip. Finally, a flatter response curve gives the driver more sensitive control over the accelerator pedal.

- Maintaining a locking torque that has been set in the centre differential for longer improves handling stability and helps the driver by making the self-steering characteristics more definite.

- Higher ASR slip thresholds when driving in a straight line result in high traction levels as well as safe operation with snow chains with outstanding tractive power.

- ASR slip thresholds lowered when cornering in order to ensure stable handling characteristics at all times as far as is physically possible.


ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for safe fun in the snow at its very best

When the ON&OFFROAD package is combined with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM (ACS), a specially programmed winter set-up guarantees dynamic driving pleasure while giving the driver excellent control over the vehicle for a high degree of handling safety. ACS uses active anti-roll bars at the front and rear axles to compensate for the roll angle of the body through bends, increasing agility and driving pleasure in the process. At the same time, the system is capable of giving the M-Class greater traction, especially in wintry road conditions with low grip levels.

The ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM “Snow mode” features two control strategies. Firstly, many of the parameters needed for driving on wintry roads are already incorporated into the basic functions, i.e. when the ON&OFFROAD package’s Automatic driving mode is activated. This means that the system’s reactions to the driver’s steering inputs will be less dynamic on slippery surfaces. External influencing factors, such as fluctuating friction coefficients on roads that are partially covered in ice or snow, are balanced out faster though. Thanks to this control strategy, the M-Class becomes far more docile, even if the vehicle switches between moderate oversteer and understeer.

Secondly, the system control for the winter driving mode includes a special control algorithm. In just the same way as the shaped skis thrill alpine skiers by closely following the desired line even through turns with a tight radius, the M-Class handles in tight bends in this mode. This control strategy produces increased traction on snow-covered road surfaces by dynamic displacement of the wheel loads. If the driver turns into a tighter bend while travelling at a constant speed or accelerating, the wheel load and, as a result, the traction will be increased at the front wheel on the outside of the bend. Doing so minimises the understeer that is otherwise typical in this driving situation. If the driver then reduces the steering angle when exiting from the bend while travelling at a constant speed or accelerating, the load at the rear wheel on the outside of the bend will be raised instead. This has the effect of increasing lateral support at the rear axle, so that the vehicle’s handling is stabilised in the same way as when entering the bend. This time though, it is the tendency to oversteer that is countered.

M-Class sets benchmarks in the world of SUVs

The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class excels above all with its outstandingly efficient use of energy. On average, the fleet consumes 25 percent less fuel than the predecessor models. The ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC is the fuel efficiency champion, consuming just 6.0 l per 100 km on the NEDC driving cycle (158 g CO2/km) and capable of covering up to 1500 kilometres on a single tank of fuel. Other key strengths of the premium SUV with permanent all-wheel drive include outstanding safety and well-balanced ride comfort combined with impressive driving dynamics both on the road and off the beaten track. A distinctive body design and a versatile interior that is highly conducive to its occupants' wellbeing further enhance the M-Class driving experience.
